Jim Lemon, retired entomologist and avid certified volunteer naturalist, will lead Cedar Bog Nature Preserve’s 2nd Saturday program at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8 on the topic “Native Pollinators.”
Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is host to a wide variety of insects because it is home to over 300 species of plants. According to the Ohio Floristic Quality Assessment Index, Cedar Bog has the highest plant diversity compared with any other site in the state.
Some native pollinators are the bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles and hummingbirds found within this unique fen. Several are endangered or threatened such as the Silver-bordered Fritillary (threatened in Ohio) and the Regal Fritillary (endangered in Ohio).
Lemon will provide a program on the native pollinators with a tour on the mile-long boardwalk loop through the fen in search of pollinators.
The program begins in the Education Center. Cost is $10 per person or $5 for Ohio History Connection or Cedar Bog Association members and children. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
Fall events
Cedar Bog is offering a “Mellow Yellow Walk” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. The admission fee is $5 for adults and $4 for OHC, CBA members and children aged 6-12 years old. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
The annual “Boo in the Bog” event 7-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, features a non-scary night walk on the boardwalk with learning stations along the way. Children’s activities, face painting, storytelling and food will be provided. The cost for this annual event is $6 for adults, $5 for children 6 and over. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Cedar Bog and Ohio History Connection members receive a $1 discount. Calling in advance to 937-484-3744 to reserve a tour spot is recommended.
To finish out the year, an “Owl Prowl” will be 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. This event is not recommended for young children. The cost is $10 per person or $5 for OHC or CBA members or children.
