Mechanicsburg welcomes new mayor

MECHANICSBURG – The Mechanicsburg Village Council met on Monday, Jan. 1 at a regularly-scheduled meeting in the municipal building.

The meeting began with retiring Mayor Greg Kimball swearing in Jason Adelsberger as the new mayor of Mechanicsburg. Council and Adelsberger’s family looked on as Adelsberger pledged to serve the community of Mechanicsburg.

Later in the meeting, council members Chuck Foss and Chip Wibright were sworn in for their new terms on the village council.

Council member Charles Hickey was then nominated as council president. The nomination was passed unanimously.

The council then approved the updated “council rules” as well as committee assignments.

Fiscal Officer Dan Eck reminded the council that 2024 is an audit year for the village. He stated that he will be reaching out to auditors to determine what kind of audit the village will have this year.

Village Administrator Roger Brake informed the council that an ad in the paper had been published regarding the open council seat. He stated that they are accepting applications until Jan. 12. Council then decided to hold interviews on Jan. 15 for any applications they receive. Brake stated that so far they have one application.

The village council has until the end of January to appoint a new council member.

Brake went on to share that the water project resumed this week.

Mechancisburg Police Chief David Patrick II shared with the council that Officer Queen has resigned, effective Jan. 4. He stated that Queen is leaving for a new employment opportunity. Patrick also shared the most recent citation list with the council.

Mechanicsburg Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Castle informed the council that his rough estimate of calls for the department for the year 2023 is approximately 800. He went on to share that it’s estimated that 75 percent of those were EMS, with the remaining 25 percent being fire-related.

The village council will meet next on Monday, Jan. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the municipal building. Village council meetings are open to the public.
