The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 230 Scioto Street in Urbana, invites the community to its free Mardi Gras party and Shrove Tuesday pancake supper on Feb. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit and beverages. Some of the maple syrup will be locally sourced. This multi-generational event will include two kid-friendly activities: a bead toss at 5:45 p.m. and pancake races beginning at 6:15 p.m. Donations will be accepted to help offset the cost of the meal. Additional funds will support the free meal offered to the community each month.

Shrove Tuesday precedes Lent, the 40-day season characterized by simplicity, humility and penance in preparation for the Easter Season. The making of pancakes the day before Lent originated in England as a way to use up cooking fat since the faithful were called to refrain from consuming it during Lent.
