The Urbana Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met Wednesday, June 14, at the Champaign County Historical Museum for the annual Flag Day potluck meeting.
Twenty-five members, including associate member State Vice Regent Kathy Dixon and three guests were present.
Regent Pat Detwiler greeted everyone and Chaplain Rev. Carol Tong gave grace and then everyone enjoyed the delicious food variety for our meal.
After the meal Regent Detwiler announced a promised surprise. Susan Denzer Taylor presented her mother, Margaret Denzer with the DAR ribbon which had on it her ancestor bar and DAR emblem. Margaret was pleasantly surprised.
Regent Detwiler then led everyone in the opening ritual and associate member State Vice Regent Kathy Dixon led the Pledge of Allegiance. The singing of the National Anthem ended the ritual.
Officer reports
Regent – Pat Detwiler stated six members will attend Continental Congress in Washington, beginning June 24.
President General’s Message – Vice Regent Kim Snyder reported that Ann Dillon, President General has been visiting chapters in the western states. State regents in those states have blogs and this can be an opportunity to learn what’s happening in their states.
National Defense – Margaret Denzer read an interesting article about “Taps” and how it came to be.
First Vice Regent – Kim Snyder gave a 2017-2018 calendar draft to everyone that showed dates, places of meetings and programs. She said electronic copies of the 2017-2018 program book will be available to those interested. Kim related she will be laying a wreath at George Washington’s Tomb at Mt. Vernon when the ladies attend the Continental Congress.
Chaplain’s Report – Rev. Carol Tong read a message from the Ohio State Chaplain and also read June member birthdays.
Recording Secretary – The May minutes were approved as written.
Treasurer – The report was given by Judy Brooks and will be filed for audit. Our chapter received quarterly Kroger rewards. Judy also said member dues of $68.00 can be sent in anytime. Associate dues are $10.00. All dues should be paid by the first meeting in September.
Registrar – Dona Tullis reported 86 members and 10 associate members. Members voted on new member Teresa Walter and the vote was unanimous.
Historian – Judy Brooks reported on behalf of Janet Ebert that the Buck Creek Cemetery sign has been installed. The next cemetery clean-up project will be Monday, June 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Kenton Cemetery on Millerstown Road. It is hoped that some members may be able to attend.
Librarian – Lana Seeberg told members about the Family Ancestry information available at the DAR library in Washington.
Committee reports
American Indians – Rev. Carol Tong read an Iroquois grace for lunch.
C.A.R. – Kim Snyder reported that 5 pounds of pull tabs were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus and a thousand books were also taken to Columbus for distribution. In all, 5000 books have been distributed. Way to go C.A.R.!
DAR Service for Veterans – Mary Pollock reminded us about items for Veterans in June and for Caring Kitchen in March.
Genealogical Records – Dolly Wisma reported that 121 genealogy pages where submitted to the State Genealogical Records Chairman. Our records were placed in with other Ohio chapters. It is Series 2, unpublished Bible Records (family records with genealogical notes and other authentic data.)
Public Relations & Media – Becky Shultz reported she was waiting on two items to be published in the Citizen and the scrapbook is up-to-date.
Service to America – Judi Henson reported we had over 1400 volunteer hours. Several members told about an interesting or unusual volunteer experience. Judi encouraged everyone to go on-line and put in their volunteer hours or notify her and she will be happy to do it.
Volunteer Information Specialist – Kim Snyder reported that updates will be available on the website soon.
Regent Detwiler reminded everyone that the chapter does not meet in July, but will meet August 21st, 1:30 p.m. for a planning meeting at First Presbyterian Church. The Fall Fun Fair is August 26 at the Dublin Marriott and everyone is welcomed to attend. Pat thanked the hostesses for today: Becky Shultz, Diane Burroughs, Amy Marsh, Jan Forsbach and Teresa Matteson.
New business
Chaplain Rev. Carol Tong made a request that a letter be drafted to National about the exclusion of the name of Jesus Christ in the DAR Missal prayer book. Regent Detwiler said the executive committee would meet to discuss this issue.
