Bond set at $100k for man following drug raid

Bond was established at $100,000 on Friday for a man who was arrested following a drug raid on Thursday.

According to the Champaign County Municipal Court’s website, the bond amount for Michael D. Ropp was established during an arraignment hearing.

Ropp, 43, of 400 E. Dallas Road, is charged with aggravated trafficking in drugs, aggravated possession of drugs, having weapons under disability, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance.

According to a court statement filed in the court, detectives and officers arrived at Ropp’s residence to execute a search warrant. Law enforcement personnel from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Police Division, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Clark County Sheriff’s Office executed the search warrant.

As law enforcement ordered Ropp out of the residence on a public announcement speaker, a male subject identified as Ropp was seen inside running around the house ignoring the commands of officers to come out.

Shortly after arriving and the command to come out, officials noticed white smoke began coming out of a fireplace vent for 25 minutes before Ropp exited the rear basement door with his hands up, finally complying with the demands given.

The Special Operations Team from the Springfield Police Division made a protective sweep of the residence as dealing with smoke that had filled the house made it difficult for them to breathe.

A search of the residence resulted in law enforcement seizing items including a metal box that had something inside which had been burnt to ashes, a short sawed off shotgun with the serial numbers filed off, a revolver and a plastic grocery bag containing three bags containing crystal material.

The weapons under disability charge stems from a previous indictment out of Greene County for felonious assault.

No plea was entered during Friday’s hearing and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 16.
