WHEELING, W. Va. – The sixth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals downed Urbana University men’s basketball by a final count of 89-63 Saturday afternoon in the McDonough Center.

UU (8-10, 3-9 MEC) has now lost four straight games since posting the program’s best start in 20 years. Wheeling Jesuit (16-2, 10-2 MEC) bounced back from a double-overtime loss on Thursday.

Junior Dalton Payton led the Blue Knights with a career-high 19 points, while going 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Payton was the only player to score in double digits for UU.

Carlas Jackson, AJ Washington and Jahmere Howze each chipped in with nine points. Howze, who leads UU in scoring this season, was kept under 10 points for the first time all season.

UU was limited to its lowest scoring output and worst field-goal percentage (32 percent) of the season.

The Blue Knights took the first lead on a Washington 3-pointer and then built a 7-6 advantage five minutes into the game. However, the hot-shooting Cardinals reclaimed the lead with a 15-1 run and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Wheeling Jesuit shot 52 percent overall, led by four players in double digits. The Cardinals held a 48-32 advantage on the glass and outscored UU 42-24 on points in the paint.

UU returns to action Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Glenville State College.

UU women fall

A big first quarter deficit proved too much as Urbana University women’s basketball suffered an 88-65 road loss to 19th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon inside the McDonough Center.

UU drops to 4-10 on the season and 2-10 against Mountain East Conference teams. The Cardinals remain undefeated at home and improve to 15-3 (10-2 MEC).

Freshman Morgan Mattimore led the Blue Knights with 16 points, going 6 of 10 from the floor to record her fourth straight double-digit performance. Mattimore, who also pulled down six boards, is shooting at a 61 percent clip over the previous four outings.

Six players scored at least seven points for UU, including Sylvia Hudson who posted 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Blue Knights shot 42 percent overall, and struggled from beyond the arc by going 6 of 24 (25 percent).

Wheeling Jesuit was led by Monica Burns (20 points), Kylie Frizell (19 points) and Jaana Motton (18 points/16 rebounds).

The Cardinals raced out to a 25-4 lead in the first quarter after taking advantage of seven Blue Knight turnovers, and ultimately led 32-11 at the end of the period.

UU’s performance improved over the rest of the game, as the combined score in the second, third and fourth quarters was 56-54. Unfortunately, the early hole the Blue Knights dug themselves was too deep. The closest margin UU reached the rest of the game was 15 points (36-21), following a 3-pointer from Erin Morrow early in the second quarter.

The Blue Knights return to action Thursday at Glenville State College.
