Committee addresses rental units ordinance

NORTH LEWISBURG – A committee asked to address an ordinance for rental units and deposits presented a recommendation to council Wednesday during the regular council meeting.

During the Oct. 11 meeting, council formed a committee to come up with a recommendation for a concern brought before them by Richard Lada.

Lada informed council he had purchased property from Keith Castle since 2012. During the transfer of properties, utilities were also transferred such as water.

Lada said previously water has cost $100 per deposit. In July he purchased 18 units and he was told he would have to pay $100 per door instead of $100 per address.

On Wednesday, council member Gwen Beech, one of the three council members on the committee, said the committee discussed what Lada presented to the village relating to deposits.

“In reviewing our current ordinance and any policies and procedures, the committee is recommending that Mr. Lada be charged as he has in the past for deposits as far as $100 per meter per building for anything that’s still pending or anything he’s recently purchased,” Beech said.

Regarding the ordinance, Beech said the committee recommended changing the definition of a unit for a multi-family dwelling and information on how deposits are charged and handled. She added the committee will look to fully review the ordinance, look at areas they need to expand upon and review rates.

Council approved amending the current ordinance to reflect changes to the definitions of multi-family dwelling and how the deposit is to be charged.

In other action:

•Village council’s next meeting will be held on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.

•Yoder said leaf pick-up will run through Nov. 30 depending on the weather. He reminded the public to not have any sticks or rocks in the pile and that leaves need to be located on the edge of the curb or street.

•According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office monthly activity report for the month of October, the village had 10 traffic citations issued, 10 incident reports taken, one arrest was made, five follow-up investigations were completed and two auto accident reports were taken.
