Arnold Palmer was an icon in the world of sports, but he never acted like one.

He seemed to really enjoy meeting new people and interacting with them.

In person, he was always friendly and willing to sign autographs for anybody who wanted one. In fact, Palmer encouraged other pro golfers to sign autographs for fans and make sure the signatures were legible.

A college friend of mine from Latrobe, Pennsylvania – Palmer’s beloved hometown – said Palmer was always accessible to the residents there.

Palmer used to hang out at Latrobe Country Club, where he grew up, and he could often be found assisting staff members with broken-down mowers and tractors.

He was always very nice to me when I started covering the Memorial Tournament in Dublin in 1980.

He always had time for an interview, even with a 16-year-old kid from a small-town newspaper.

Without a doubt, Palmer was one of a kind, and he will truly be missed.
