Early goals lift UU over Fairmont State

Freshman duo Jordin Littles and Kobi Bryant each scored their first career goal, helping UU pick up its first win of the season, 2-0, over Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon inside UU Stadium.

The Blue Knights improve to 1-7 and 1-5 in league play, while the Fighting Falcons drop to 2-6-1 and 0-6-1 against conference opponents.

UU controlled possession for the majority of the match and scored both goals within a span of 10 minutes early on. Littles toed a beautful pass from freshman Camryn Moreno to put UU ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute. Moreno sent a perfect line drive through-ball 20 yards into the box from the right sideline, and then Littles greeted the pass with a one-touch strike into the back of the net.

UU kept the pressure on and came up with the second goal in the 27th minute, again coming off a nice through ball.

After a blocked shot ricocheted off a Falcon defender, Brooke Kasianczuk controlled the ball near the 40-yard mark and passed to Bronte Flannery on the right side. Flannery then tore open the defense with a grounder into space, setting up Bryant for a one-on-one against the FSU keeper. Bryant took the ball on the right side of the box and flicked it in front of the keeper into the left side of the net, putting UU ahead for good, 2-0.

The Blue Knights outshot the visitors 18-7 overall, while putting up six shots on goal.

Freshman Katherine Beech registered her first clean sheet between the pipes for UU, improving her record to 1-4. Beech registered three saves in net.

Monica Tenorio led UU with seven shots, followed by Bryant’s three attempts on goal.

UU will return to the pitch this week when it travels to Shepherd for a noon contest on Wednesday.
