ST. PARIS – On Nov. 5, the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association presented JSP Joint Fire District Chief Scott Massie with the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ credential.
The Credentialing Program sets forth the goals needed for chief fire officers to establish a higher degree of professionalism so that fire chiefs may be better prepared to serve their department, their community and other organizations. The goal is to promote the professional development of the chief fire officer in Ohio and to assist these chiefs in their daily operations, management and leadership. The credentials recognize Massie’s skills, including occupational education, fire service-related training and experience.
With over 900 fire chiefs in Ohio, and as one of only 50 fire chiefs to receive this designation, the credentials are significant in identifying fire service leaders in the state. Massie received the certification as well as a citation bar for display on his Class “A” Uniform.
“The JSP fire district is so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people who serve tirelessly to protect the residents of the territory they cover,” said JSP Joint Fire District Board President Larry Watkins.
“Chief Massie has continued to grow in his position and has shown his devotion in both continued training and education,” Watkins said. “The fire board is excited to see what future achievements he and the department attain. We extend our congratulations and pledge to support him in his goals.”
Developed in early 2014, the designation seeks to provide independent verification and certification of fire chiefs in the state.
Each applicant is measured against a pre-determined set of standards, and a panel of peers across the state reviews the applications. Renewal of credentials is required every three years.
Massie has served on the JSP Joint Fire District over 25 years, progressing from volunteer, to Level 1 and 2 firefighter certificates, to lieutenant and to chief in July 2012.
“It has been a personal goal for me to complete the credentialing program offered by the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association,” said Massie. “It is an honor to be included among others in the state with passion and dedication to fire service.”
