Indians advance to district golf tourney

ARCANUM – The Mechanicsburg boys golf team finished third at the Division III sectional golf tournament at Beechwood Golf Course with a 342. That finish was good enough to qualify the team to the district tournament for the first time since 1991.

Caleb Westfall, who won the tournament last year as a freshman, tied for the low round this season with a 72. Mack Cushman finished third with a 77, Cody Minor shot a 95, Corey Bogan had a 98 and Jack Shoemaker had a 101.

WL-S finished seventh out of 17 teams with a 368 but did not advance.

For the Tigers, Dillon Callicoat had an 83, Max Eggleston an 83, Tyler Gardner a 98, Michael Frederick a 104 and Tylar Jett a 110.

Mechanicsburg will compete at the district tournament on Thursday, Oct. 8 at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

Graham tops UHS in volleyball

Graham defeated Urbana, 25-12, 25-16, 25-21, in CBC/MRD volleyball on Tuesday night.

For the Falcons (12-5, 5-1), Lisa DeWeese had 16 kills and 2 blocks, Carly Carafa had 15 kills, Kaitlin Trace had 8 kills and 2 blocks and Lauryn Holcomb added 5 aces and 19 digs.

Hunter Rogan had 10 kills for Urbana. Mckenzee Martin had 8 kills and Olivia Dunham had 15 assists.

Urbana won the jayvee match, 25-22, 26-24. Desi Johnson and Bridgette Ofori each had 3 kills.

The Falcons play at Greenon on Thursday.

Gilroy sets assists record

Monday night, Kylie Gilroy, a senior volleyball setter at West Liberty-Salem, broke the school’s record of 1,725 career assists. Going into the match against Northeastern, Gilroy had already totaled 1,682 career assists. In the four-set win over Northeastern, she earned 48 assists, for a total of 1,730 assists to date. Her 44th assist, which is the one she needed to break the school record, came in the fourth set.

Gilroy has already totaled 453 assists for this season, which currently ranks her as 19th in all of Ohio for total assists. She is averaging 9.1 assists per game.

WL-S, M’burg rated in poll

In the latest computer prep football playoff poll, WL-S (4-1) is rated third and Mechanicsburg (5-0) is fifth in Division VI, Region 22.

The two teams meet Friday night at WL-S.

The top eight teams in each region will advance to the playoffs and the top four will host a first-round game.

M’burg wins in girls soccer

Mechanicsburg beat Southeastern, 6-1, in OHC girls soccer on Tuesday.

For the Indians, senior captain Sydney Hux had 3 shots on goal, one resulting in a goal, and one assist, senior captain Hayli Jacobs had one shot on goal, senior Maddie Maxwell had one shot on goal, sophomore Tori Jacobs had 7 shots on goal, 5 resulting in goals scored, and one assist and freshman Kameron Loveless had 11 shots on goal and 2 assists.

Johns earns CBC honor

Urbana’s Haylee Johns was named special mention All-CBC in girls tennis.

Junior high football

Graham’s 7th graders beat Indian Lake, 22-0. Standouts for Graham included Brady King, Nick Moore, Trace Braun, Jaesen Casey, Harper Lee, Colby Strader and Grant Whetstone.
