MECHANICSBURG – A new digital sign, purchased through fundraising by several Mechanicsburg student councils, is up and running in front of the school building.
The almost $17,000 sign was largely funded by Student Council members between 2003 and 2008 selling concessions at school athletic events. The group raised $15,000 toward the purchase of the sign, which cost $16,990, Mechanicsburg Treasurer Scott Maruniak said.
Former Student Council co-advisors Judi Trainer and Kim Poland said the 1987 Student Council fundraised for the last sign that was in front of the school. When the district started plans for a new school building, the Student Council started financial plans for a new sign.
“They thought it would be nice to have a new one,” said Trainer, a retired business teacher at the junior high and high school.
Trainer and Poland said they wanted a digital sign because they had been the ones changing the letters on the previous sign, an uncomfortable task in the winter months.
Student Council started saving money in 2003 and finished in the 2007-08 school year. Installing the sign had to wait until the new building was constructed, Mechanicsburg Superintendent Danielle Prohaska said.
“We are thrilled we were finally able to make it happen,” she said of the new sign.
The new building was built in 2007.
The new sign was installed over the summer, Prohaska said.
