A Dayton man was indicted by a Champaign County grand jury on Wednesday for allegedly promoting prostitution locally.

Michael W. Chambers, 38, of 22 Woodcrest Ave., is charged with three counts of promoting prostitution and one count each of possessing criminal tools, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana and obstructing official business stemming from conduct that occurred on Aug. 26.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said police responded to a report of a suspicious occupied vehicle at 12:19 a.m. on that date in the area of the 100 block of Wards Lane. Upon arrival, police observed a male who identified himself using a fake name and then took off running.

Police pursued the man and located him hiding in a shed behind a nearby residence. The man was taken into custody inside the shed and again gave officers false identifying information.

Police were able to identify him as Chambers and found him to be in possession of marijuana. Chambers was arrested for possession of drugs and obstructing official business for giving police false information and running from them. He was taken to jail.

While speaking to the resident of the home where Chambers was found hiding in a shed, police found Richard Bowser Jr., 40, of Urbana, and took him into custody for outstanding bench warrants issued from the Champaign County Municipal Court. He was also taken to jail.

A woman from the suspicious vehicle, Corri A. Carter, 26, of 256 E. Nottingham Road, Dayton, was arrested for possession of cocaine, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia and was also taken to jail.

Carter confirmed that Chambers was in the car with her and they had been at the residence where Chambers was caught hiding.

Lingrell said a further police investigation, with assistance from local officers of the Adult Parole Authority, led to additional criminal charges presented to the grand jury against Chambers involving this case.

The grand jury indictment contends that Chambers supervised, managed and controlled the activities of a prostitute in engaging in sexual activity for hire. The indictment further states he transported Carter in order to facilitate her engaging in sexual activity for hire.

Carter was also indicted Wednesday for two counts of illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia and one count each of possession of cocaine and possession of heroin.
