A Champaign County grand jury indicted an Urbana man Thursday who allegedly stabbed a man during a theft attempt from earlier this year.

Larry H. McLaughlin, 66, of 208 N. High St., is charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, vandalism and assault stemming from an April 4 incident.

On that evening, Urbana police were dispatched to the Little Nashville Bar, 115 S. Main St., in reference to a person being robbed and stabbed. Court documents state that during a theft, McLaughlin allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed a man’s stomach.

The victim was not transported to a hospital following the incident.

Once located, McLaughlin refused to follow police orders before he was tackled and continued to struggle with officers as they attempted to place him in a cruiser. The grand jury indictment contends that as a result of his conduct, the cruiser needed to be repaired, preventing police from using the vehicle.

McLaughlin was reportedly uncooperative as paramedics tried to examine scrapes and abrasions to his face and later attempted to kick at an officer with pointed cowboy boots.

McLaughlin was placed on electronic monitoring and ordered to remain at his residence as part of a personal recognizance bond Friday during an initial arraignment hearing. He was also ordered to not have contact with the victim, enter any establishment that serves alcohol or consume alcohol.

The arraignment hearing is scheduled to continue on Monday.

Motorcyclist indicted for high-speed chase

A motorcyclist who sustained injuries following a high-speed chase with law enforcement last month is now facing multiple felony charges.

Tye W. Spellman, 23, of 3000 St. Paris-Jackson Road, St. Paris, was indicted Thursday on two counts each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them and one count each of theft, receiving stolen property and operating a motor vehicle bearing an invalid license plate or identification mark.

Around 3:30 a.m. on May 24, the St. Paris Police Department was in pursuit of Spellman in the area of Christiansburg-Jackson Road and Old Troy Pike after an officer observed him commit a traffic violation. Despite being ordered to pull over in the 200 block of South Springfield Street, Spellman allegedly continued south at speeds reaching in excess of 90 mph.

Due to the high rate of speed and concern for public safety, the officer determined that it was too dangerous to continue the pursuit.

At some point afterward, police report, Spellman lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a field, but not before hitting a curve sign on the side of the road. Believing the driver could have ditched the motorcycle, the officer continued to check the area and located Spellman, who had several injuries.

Medics were dispatched to the scene and Spellman was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center before he was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. He was released on May 26.

The grand jury indictment contends the theft charge stems from Spellman using a motorcycle license plate without the consent of the owner or person authorized to give consent.

Spellman is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on June 17.

Driver in chase charged again

In a separate case, a man who was scheduled to be sentenced this month for leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase is facing a new felony charge.

Chad M. Rittenhouse, 28, at large, last known address of 8239 E. state Route 36, Woodstock, is charged with one count of failure to appear as required by recognizance for failing to attend a bond review hearing.

On Jan. 20, Rittenhouse was stopped by a Mechanicsburg police officer due to an active warrant out of Madison County for aggravated trespassing. As other law enforcement agents pulled behind the office to assist, Rittenhouse reportedly drove off at speeds of 50 mph in a 20 mph zone close to when school was letting out in Mechanicsburg.

Law enforcement had a hard time staying with Rittenhouse as he began passing two and three cars at a time, traveled at 90 mpg, ran a stop sign and went head-on with on-coming traffic at times.

After he was indicted in February, Rittenhouse pleaded guilty to one count of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, a third degree felony, in April. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for June 11.

On May 14, Champaign County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi filed a motion to revoke Rittenhouse’s bond for a number of alleged incidents he partook in after pleading guilty.

The motion states Rittenhouse failed to appear for an April 28 pre-sentence investigation appointment and was cited for driving under suspension after he was observed driving a motor vehicle in Mechanicsburg on May 10.

On the following day, Rittenhouse was observed trespassing at a Champaign County Sheriff deputy’s residence. Rittenhouse reportedly approached a patrol vehicle that was parked in the deputy’s driveway, posed for a picture next to the sheriff’s emblem on the vehicle and extended his middle finger.

Later in the day, Rittenhouse was again observed driving while under suspension and taken into custody for the trespassing violation.

A hearing on the state’s motion to revoke bond was held on May 21 where Rittenhouse failed to appear. A capias warrant was issued for his arrest.

•Leonard G. Martin, Jr., 33, of 2109 S. state Route 235, St. Paris, one count each of aggravated trafficking in drugs, aggravated possession of drugs and permitting drug abuse.

•David N. Blevins, 36, of 116 W. Plum St., Urbana, one count each of aggravated possession of drugs and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

•Zachary S. Kelso, 20, of 413 Railroad St., Urbana, one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, possession of drugs, possession of marijuana, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal use or possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia.

•Steven L. Inskeep, 57, of 314 Miami St., Apt. 2, Urbana, two counts each of possession of marijuana and illegal cultivation of marijuana.

•Kyle D. Puffinbarger, 51, of 106 E. Concord Lane, Bloomingburg, one count each of possession of heroin and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
