A new office building for the Champaign County Junior Fair Board should be up and running for the upcoming Champaign County Fair.

The building, to be named after longtime Fair Board President Melvin Cook, will be a place for the Junior Fair Board to conduct business, said co-advisor Brian Cordial.

“The structure will be up and ready for fair within the next couple of weeks,” Cordial said in early July.

The Champaign County Fair is Aug. 7-14 this year.

The structure is named after Cook, who died in January. Cook was a big supporter of 4-H programs around the county, and of the fair itself.

The building itself will be a 24-foot by 32-foot pole barn structure, Cordial said. In addition to serving as office space for the junior Fair Board, the structure will serve as storage for the trophies and ribbons handed out during fair. The Junior Fair Board has been using other people’s homes and kitchens to store these items previously.

The building is planned to have electricity, but there is no guarantee heating and air conditioning will be in place by the fair’s start, Cordial said. Those items will depend on future fundraising. Cordial did not have an estimated price tag attached to the addition of heating and cooling.

To donate, send checks to the Champaign County Fair Exhibition Center, 384 Park Ave., P.O. Box 38157, Urbana OH 43078. All donations are tax deductible. For more information, call Cordial at 937-206-2846 or co-advisor Levi Runkle at 740-506-1160.
