The Champaign Family YMCA is announcing a free trial practice for the Flying Fish (CF3) Winter Swim Team Sept. 28 at the Y. Two informational parent meetings have been held at the Y in the past week and one more is scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Y during practice to answer any questions, provide parent handbooks, and to begin the registration process.
The Flying Fish compete in the North Division of the Southwest Ohio YMCA Swim League against regional YMCAs such as Springfield, Bellefontaine, Sidney-Shelby, and Miami County among others. Practices and home meets will be held at the Urbana University Grimes Center Natatorium as well as the Champaign Family YMCA, and official practices are slated to start October 2. Fall athletes will join the team as soon as they are able.
High school swimmers have several options as well. If the swimmer’s local school does not offer interscholastic swimming, the Y will provide certified, on-deck coaches for various high school meets during the season. This will provide each high schooler the opportunity to compete for his or her school. High schools that do offer a swim team can still benefit from the CF3’s pre-season workout options for their dedicated swimmers.
The CF3 team aims to provide each swimmer, 5-18 years old, the opportunity to grow both socially and emotionally while learning the values of team sportsmanship and competition. Through the program, character traits of caring, responsibility, honesty, and respect will not only be learned and practiced, but also expected of each swimmer and coach.
