Warrant issued for indicted driver

A warrant has been issued for a man who was indicted earlier this month on felony vehicular assault charges.

A capias warrant was issued to apprehend Julio R. Freeman after he failed to appear for a March 16 arraignment hearing in the Champaign County Common Pleas Court. A journal entry on last week’s arraignment states that service at Freeman’s address listed on the summons on indictment was unsuccessful.

The hearing was continued until March 30 to allow more time to perfect service upon Freeman.

The hearing continued later that day after it was discovered that Freeman had received service after the conclusion of the initial hearing. The court ordered for a capias to be issued the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office to apprehend Freeman wherever he may be found and cause him to be brought before the court.

Freeman, 26, of Springfield, was indicted on two counts each of second degree felony aggravated vehicular assault, third degree felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor charges operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them stemming from a Feb. 2 injury crash that occurred at 3263 U.S. Route 68.

A vehicle was traveling southbound on South U.S. Route 68 and had slowed for a vehicle turning into a driveway when Freeman, who was traveling southbound in a 2001 silver Dodge Intrepid, failed to slow down, crossing into the northbound lane of traffic and sideswiping the vehicle before continuing head-on into a 2009 black Volkswagen Jetta driven by Jill D. Powell, of Springfield.

The Jetta flipped over and landed on the driver’s side off the right side of the roadway.

CareFlight was called to the scene and airlifted Powell to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. Norma J. Maute, a passenger in Powell’s vehicle, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center before being transported to Miami Valley Hospital.

Both Powell and Maute suffered serious injuries in the crash. The grand jury indictment contends Freeman was driving under a suspension imposed by law.

Vehicular assault case dates to Feb. 2
