City of Urbana asphalt projects begin May 8

For calendar year 2024, the City of Urbana has approved contracts for the city’s yearly asphalt paving and maintenance projects with the city’s crack sealing program scheduled to start on May 8.

Under contract with Russell Standard Corporation for $36,152.10, this year’s crack sealing program is planned for the following streets: Freeman Avenue from Miami Street to Union Alley; West Light Street from Railroad Street to North Oakland Street; West Broadway Street from South High Street to South Main Street; West Powell Avenue from South Main Street to the dead end; East Powell Avenue from South Main Street to South Kenton Street; Lincoln Street from South Walnut Street to South Main Street; Thompson Street from South High Street to South Main Street; College Street from South High Street to South Main Street; South Walnut Street from West Powell Avenue to West Reynolds Street; Scioto Street from Locust Street to the State Route 29/US Route 36 split; East Light Street from North Main Street to Talbot Avenue; Julia Street from Bloomfield Avenue to Boyce Street; and Bloomfield Avenue from East Lawn Avenue to the railroad crossing.

In addition, the portions of Childrens Home Road and East Lawn Avenue that are shared between the City of Urbana and Urbana Township will be crack sealed with the cost of this work being shared between these two governmental entities.

Parking restrictions will be posted within work areas in advance of the work, and vehicles parked in violation will be towed.

In addition to these planned crack sealing projects, the City of Urbana recently awarded a contract to A&B Asphalt Corporation for asphalt resurfacing projects within the city in the amount of $599,866.65. This asphalt resurfacing work will be scheduled after July 15 and will be completed no later than Oct. 11 with the following streets to be resurfaced: Gwynne Street from Railroad Street to North Oakland Street; Lafayette Avenue from North Main Street to Wood Street; Lincoln Place from North Main Street to Wood Street; Westview Drive; North Drive; Julia Street from Bloomfield Avenue to the northern dead end; and Julia Street from Dellinger Road to the southern dead end.

As early as May 13, D.L. Smith Concrete LLC is anticipated to mobilize and complete city-funded curb ramp replacements on Lafayette Avenue, Lincoln Place, and Gwynne Street in advance of the asphalt resurfacing work with completion on or before Friday, July 12. In addition, this concrete contractor will be replacing deteriorated or missing sidewalks and curb sections on these streets where property owners have either opted for the city to complete this work or failed to complete this work themselves prior to the deadline. Billing to each property owner will follow completion of this concrete work.

Later this summer, the City of Urbana will pay the Champaign County Engineer’s Office to chip seal and fog seal James Avenue between South Edgewood Avenue and College Way and the driveways within Oak Dale Cemetery at a cost of approximately $47,905.21. Lastly, restriping of pavement markings by First Star Safety LLC under contract with the city for $13,428.64 is planned on Scioto Street (State Route 29 East), U.S. Route 36 East, and North Oakland Street. In addition, pavement markings will be refreshed on Childrens Home Road and East Lawn Avenue with costs shared between the City of Urbana and Urbana Township for these two roadways.
