The Urbana Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, in BrownRidge Hall at 10 a.m. Fifteen veterans and two active-duty members were guests, as well as five other guests. Twenty-four members attended. A social time preceded the meeting.

Regent Kim Snyder called the meeting to order. Pat Detwiler led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and Dona Tullis led the reading of the American’s Creed. Becky Shultz led in singing the National Anthem. Regent Snyder led as we recited the Preamble to the Constitution.

Two new members were inducted in a service led by Dona Tullis, Registrar, Lynda Berube, Chaplain, and Regent Kim Snyder. Becky Preston and Anna Selvaggio are current members of the Cuttahotha Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.).

Regent Snyder welcomed the Veterans present, members of VFW and DAV and others. She followed by asking them to stand or raise their hand when their branch of the military was stated. Claudia Foulk read “Veterans’ Poem.”

A Quilt of Valor (QOV) was presented to Bob Max, Vietnam Veteran, by quilter and Past-Regent Janet Evans. Regent Snyder explained that the mission of QOV is to honor service members and veterans who have been touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Over 362,564 quilts have been awarded since 2003. Max, who’s Army role involved medical evacuation in Vietnam, served 15 years on the Veterans Service Commission of Champaign County. He accepted the quilt on behalf of all local Veterans. He was wrapped in the quilt by Evans and Regent Snyder in a gesture of appreciation and welcomed home.

Regent Snyder introduced Parker Riley, Staff Sgt, 126th Intelligence Squadron and Ohio Air National Guard, who brought an enlightening presentation on the 178th ISR Group, the 126th Intelligence Squadron and the history and mission of the USA Space Force. SST Riley and MST Heath Friessen, 126th Intelligence Squadron and Ohio Air National Guard, were each presented with an Ohio DAR Challenge Coin with thanks for their service. Urbana Chapter DAR will sponsor wreaths at Oak Dale Cemetery to honor their program.

Pat Detwiler and Regent Snyder gave information related to the upcoming Wreaths Across America (WAA) placements at Oak Dale Cemetery on Saturday, December 16. Volunteers are needed to help in placing these memorial wreaths on veterans’ graves. Kenton Ridge National Honor Society, and VFW/DAV members will help set up starting at 9:00 am. Special layings will occur at 11:00 am. A ceremony with Color Guard, Honor Guard, and Echo TAPS will take place at noon, followed by general laying. Bob Angles presented the Chapter with a check in support for the WAA project by local VFW/DAV.

Claudia Foulk gave a Service for Veterans report and Lynda Berube gave a Patriotic prayer. Veterans in attendance were given pins. The meeting continued after a short break.

The President General’s Report, the National Defender, and the minutes were emailed to members; with no questions about the minutes, they will be filed.

Regent’s Report: Regent Snyder started with a huge thanks to Claudia Foulk for sending 100 cards to veterans for Veterans Day. She thanked those who participated in the flag retirement on Nov. 11, and showed slides of the event. She urged members to consider going to the Christmas Open House that was held Dec. 2 and 3 at Christian Waldschmidt Homestead. On Monday, Dec. 11, the State House WAA ceremony will occur in Columbus in the Capitol Atrium.
