Hearing cancelled in WL-S shooting case

A hearing scheduled for this week in the case of a juvenile charged in a January shooting at West Liberty-Salem High School has been cancelled.

A competency hearing for Ely R. Serna, 17, was scheduled for Wednesday, but a memo to media outlets provided by the Champaign County Common Pleas Court Juvenile Division states the court has cancelled this hearing.

The memo notes a hearing scheduled for April 7 remains on the docket and will be regarding Serna’s competency.

Serna is facing 13 charges including two counts of attempted murder and six counts of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or a school safety zone stemming from the Jan. 20 shooting.

When he last appeared in court on Feb. 3, a competency evaluation was ordered for Serna after Judge Lori Reisinger stated a motion to determine competency was filed on Feb. 1.

Because his competency needs to be determined to proceed in the case, action on other motions such as a motion to bind the case over to the general division of the common pleas court are on hold.

West Liberty-Salem High School student Logan Cole was one of two students injured in the shooting. Cole returned to school in mid-February following weeks of recovery from injuries sustained in the shooting.
