A driver was charged with driving under the influence after crashing into an apartment building Thursday night.
Sean Gillis, 31, of 112 S. 6th St., Coldwater, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and failure to control a motor vehicle.
Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said Urbana police and fire personnel were dispatched at 1:03 a.m. Friday to a reported auto crash involving a vehicle into an apartment at the Settler’s Ridge complex on West state Route 29.
Upon arrival, officers found the crashed vehicle had completely gone inside the northwest corner of the apartment, resulting in severe damage to the building and vehicle.
The resident of the apartment was in another room at the time of the crash and was not injured.
Police arrested Gillis, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai. Gillis and two passengers in his car were also uninjured in the crash.
Lingrell said it took several hours for the scene to be cleared as officials worked to remove the vehicle from the building and to make the building as safe as possible pending a building inspection later on Friday. He added some residents had to be evacuated due to the level of damage to the building.
According to the Champaign County Municipal Court’s website, a bench warrant was issued for Gillis on Friday.
