West Liberty-Salem High School’s January Seniors of the Month are Ben Hyland and Alexa Smith. Here are their comments.
Ben Hyland
PARENTS: Kathy & Elverton Hyland
School Activities and Awards: I am involved in football, baseball, and Key Club.
If I were principal for a day: If I were principle for a day I would cancel school to give the students a break.
Favorite school memory: My favorite school memory is spending time with my teammates.
People who have been an inspiration to me include: My mother is an inspiration to me.
Because: She continuously fights her battles with strength and courage, and believes in the path that god has made for her.
Lately, I have been reading: The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
My advice to parents: Let your kids make their own decisions, guide them while they grow up, but let them make their own decisions. Giving them the freedom to do so will allow them to learn from their own mistakes and grow.
My biggest regret: My biggest regret is not b in able to play all four years of football and basketball due to my hip injury.
Next year I will be: Next year I will be attending Ohio University, majoring in business analytics.
Alexa Smith
PARENTS: Geoffrey and Amanda Smith
School Activities and Awards: Key Club, Link Crew, National Honor Society, and Cheerleading.
If I were principal for a day: I would cancel exams.
Favorite school memory: Getting to spend all four years of high school with my friends and starting a Key Club.
People who have been an inspiration to me include: My parents, and Crystal Johnson.
Because: My parents inspire me because they are always encouraging me to be myself and push me to do my best. Crystal Johnson also inspires me because she is always encouraging me to pursue my dreams to be a teacher and is always positive no matter what is going on.
Lately, I have been reading: The New Jim Crow, The Book Thief, and Homage to Catalonia.
My advice to parents: To let their kids be themselves and encourage them to do what they love.
My biggest regret: Worrying too much about what people think of me.
Next year I will be: attending a four year college and majoring in Middle Education.
