A week before election day Ohio Supreme Court candidate Judge Pat DeWine spoke to county officials during a meet and greet Tuesday at TeaBaggers, 127 N. Main St.
DeWine’s stop in Champaign County was one of multiple stops in the state he was scheduled to make Tuesday, including Logan and Union counties.
“Our goal at this point is simply to touch and talk to as many voters as possible about the Ohio Supreme Court,” DeWine told the Daily Citizen. “The court doesn’t always get the same amount of attention that some of the other races get, so we’re doing a lot of grassroots outreach to try to simply talk to Ohio voters.”
DeWine, currently on the First District Court of Appeals, is running for a state Supreme Court justice seat against Judge Cynthia Rice who serves on the 11th District Court of Appeals.
Voters will also vote on the state Supreme Court justice race between First District Court of Appeals Judge Pat Fischer and Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge John P. O’Donnell.
DeWine said Tuesday’s event was organized through Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin, who invited other county officials to attend.
“It’s a great group of people in Champaign County. I grew up coming to Champaign County fairly often when I was a kid and I think it’s important to talk to people about having an Ohio Supreme Court that sticks to the constitution and that doesn’t legislate from the bench,” DeWine said.
“I’d just like to thank the judge for coming,” Melvin said. “Out of the people running he’s the one who’s come to Champaign County and asked us for his support and showed the appreciation we give him and he explained what he was running for. I appreciate that opportunity to have him here this morning.”
