North Elementary students meet Sparky

Urbana North Elementary students were treated to an assembly and a visit from Sparky on Tuesday. The event was to recognize students for good behavior and attendance.

This was the school’s first Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports assembly, a way for school personnel to help students be respectful and responsible, Principal Dr. Julie Willoughby said.

Getting to school on time is important, and research shows children chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are less likely to read proficiently by the end of the third grade, she said.

Students who had perfect attendance (and were at school on time) or no behavioral referrals to the office for the quarter got a ticket for each achievement. The tickets are for a drawing for a free bicycle. One girl and one boy are selected as winners every quarter.

Students were given T-shirts to wear for this and future assemblies. Shirts and the other prizes were provided by a number of sponsors around the community.
