NECCFD to outfit rescue with new tires

NORTH LEWISBURG – The Northeast Champaign County Fire District Board on Monday approved the purchase of four new tires for the district’s rescue vehicle and agreed to a 12-month service agreement for the fire station’s generator.

Fire Chief Mike Penhorwood informed the board that upon inspection of rescue 323, it was discovered only one of the vehicle’s four tires had “decent tread” remaining. Citing a need to address the issue before winter rolls in, Penhorwood presented the board with a purchase order totaling $1,928.82 (labor included) for the purchase of four Continental hybrid tires from Spain’s Service Center, North Lewisburg.

“Talking to Dave Spain, they (Continental hybrids) are a little cheaper, but he said for what we use the rescue for, the tires are sufficient enough for that truck,” Penhorwood said.

Following discussion on the matter, the board agreed to move forward with the purchase of the new tires.

“I’d rather be safe than sorry,” board Chairwoman Cheryl Hollingsworth said.

Also during the meeting, Penhorwood addressed the station’s generator and suggested it be placed in a regular maintenance program to ensure it remains in working condition.

The board agreed with Penhorwood’s recommendation and passed a motion entering into a 12-month generator service agreement with Buckeye Power Sales Co. Inc., Blacklick. The agreement, which runs through Aug. 31, 2017, includes two service trips.

In other business:

•Penhorwood reported that through August, the district made 367 fire and EMS runs in 2016, up 30 from the same time last year.

•The board approved sending the district’s three full-time employees to The Buckeye Fire and EMS Conference to be held Oct. 27-28 at The Blackwell Inn on the campus of The Ohio State University. The cost for the two-day training program is $75 per person.
