Romero leads Mechanicsburg to victory


MECHANICSBURG – Homecoming was a crowd-pleaser for Mechanicsburg Friday night as the Indians delighted with a 51-6 victory over winless Cedarville in Ohio Heritage Conference football action.

Kaleb Romero started a dual record-setting night and the team’s scoring with a 26-yard end zone run for his 414th career point. The scored points broke a school record previously held by Aeryton Erwin with 412. Alex Rhine kicked the extra point and the Burg held a 7-0 lead.

There wasn’t much drama as the home Indians broke far ahead on the scoreboard. Romero dashed 41 yards, breaking tacklers and zig-zagging across the field to set up his own 2-yard TD run. Another PAT gave MHS a 14-0 lead.

MHS’s Dustin Knapp scored a 20-yard run to help give his team a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. Romero scored on a 16-yard TD run to start the second quarter for a 27-0 lead.

Romero followed his all-time MHS scoring record by breaking another school milestone on a pass to Rhine. Romero became MHS’s all-time leading passer with 4,468 yards, breaking Andy Huffman’s record of 4,436 yards.

Romero connected with Knapp on a 13-yard TD pass at 5:40 of the second quarter for a 34-0 lead. By the half, it was 43-0.

Mack DeLong added an 11-yard TD run and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter for the home team.

Mechanicsburg had 411 total yards compared to 12 for Cedarville (0-4, 0-1).

Mechanicsburg (4-0, 1-0) plays at winless Triad next Friday night.

Bellefontaine 59, Graham 7

ST. PARIS – Bellefontaine cruised past winless Graham, 59-7, Friday night in CBC football.

The Chieftains (2-2) scored on a pair of passes and a 73-yard punt return in the first quarter to grab a 21-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Bellefontaine found paydirt on three runs and a 41-yard pass.

On the last play of the first half, Graham quarterback Gage Braun connected with Tyler Powell on an eight-yard TD pass to make it 49-7 at the half.

The Falcons (0-4) play at Kenton Ridge next Friday night.

WL-S 55, Northeastern 20

WEST LIBERTY – Led by Brandon Wolfe’s five touchdowns, WL-S knocked off Northeastern, 55-20, Friday night in OHC football.

After falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, Wolfe scored on a 13-yard run and quarterback Luke Woods later added a one-yard scoring run to make it 14-7.

A long TD pass moments later brought the Jets to within 14-13, but the Tigers responded with Wolfe scoring runs of 30 and 50 yards to make it 27-13 at the half.

Wolfe scored a defensive touchdown early in the third quarter on an interception return to push the lead to 34-13.

NE pulled to within 34-20 moments later, but a long punt return TD near the end of the third quarter gave the Tigers a 41-20 lead, and the score soon increased to 55-20 thanks to a 54-yard run by Wolfe and a 45-yard punt return.

Wolfe rushed for 232 yards on 14 carries.

WL-S (2-2, 1-0) hosts Greeneview next Friday night.

Greeneview 59, Triad 15

JAMESTOWN – Greeneview downed winless Triad, 59-15, Friday night in an OHC game that was delayed 40 minutes by lightning.

Trailing 59-0, the Cardinals scored with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on Dylan Rice’s one-yard run. With less than a minute to play, Triad’s Jordan Simonelli added a one-yard scoring run.

Triad (0-4, 0-1) hosts unbeaten Mechanicsburg next Friday night.
