Senior captain Nathan Jones came up huge with a penalty-kick save in the 76th minute to preserve a 1-0 lead, and No. 16 Urbana University added an insurance goal to move past Lock Haven 2-0 Sunday at UU Stadium.

Sophomore Jordan Coxall provided the game-winner in the 68th minute, firing from close range inside the right corner of the box off an assist from freshman Jasminko Dizdarevic.

In the 89th minute, freshman Jake Wischmeier, who was a late substitution, provided the second goal after he got a breakaway run and converted the scoring opportunity. Freshman Raphael Northoff set up the strike with his first career assist.

The Blue Knights held a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half and controlled the pace, but the two teams entered the break in a scoreless tie.

However, the visitors made adjustments and put pressure on the UU defense with three shots early in the second half.

Jones – who was named the MEC Player of the Week – and company were up to the challenge, though, and played well in the final 45 minutes.

The keeper from Wales registered his first shutout of the season with five saves. He entered the season as the program leader in career shutouts, improving his total to 17 following Sunday’s contest.

UU outshot the Bald Eagles 16-11 as Thibaut Bourrier and David Veauthier led UU with three shots each.

The Blue Knights also held the corner-kick advantage, 6-1.

UU will open conference play on Wednesday in a much-anticipated rematch against rival No. 2 Charleston. The Golden Eagles, who were the national runner-ups in 2015, eliminated the Blue Knights in last year’s NCAA regional semifinal, 1-0.

UU hasn’t beaten UC since 2013.

Kickoff in Charleston, West Virginia, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
