Military appreciation race set

When it comes to choosing the ideal location to host a 5K in this area, race organizers have a variety of options from parks and local trails to the scenic countryside of places like Ohio Caverns.

On June 11, a new location is being thrown into the mix when Grimes Field in Urbana, usually reserved for pilots instead of runners, serves as the site of the inaugural Military Appreciation 5K.

“The airport is a perfect place to run,” Airport Manager Lou Driever said. “It has nice vistas, level ground and a bucolic setting.

“Usually, it’s verboten for running due to the potential conflict with air traffic,” he said. “Under controlled conditions, however, it makes for a pleasant, safe and interesting site to run. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Premier Races of Powell is event manager and will provide the timing services for the race, which will begin at 8:15 a.m.

“This is a great opportunity for all the track and cross country kids to get out there and stay in shape throughout the summer,” Driever said, adding the 5K is being promoted as a family event, considering it’s being held in conjunction with the second annual Military Appreciation Day at Grimes Field.

“Most races are a destination in and of themselves. Here, however, the race is merely the prelude for the rest of the day,” Driever added. “If you take part in the race, you will be done by 9 a.m. You will then have the whole day to enjoy aviation here at the airport. It’s an event for the entire family, not just the runners.”

Registration details

Runners interested in participating in the Military Appreciation 5K can sign up online at premierraces.com. The cost to register is $20 prior to June 10 and $25 the day of the race.

Driever said registration includes free admission to Military Appreciation Day at Grimes Field as well as a commemorative baseball cap.

“The proceeds of the race will be applied toward coverage of the expenses of holding the event in appreciation of our veterans,” he added.
