CEDARVILLE – Urbana University (1-16) lost twice against Cedarville in Monday’s softball doubleheader, 1-0 and 10-5, at the Lady Jacket Softball Field.

Down to their final out in Game 1, the Blue Knights proceeded to load the bases but couldn’t keep the rally going against Cedarville starter Morgan Arbogast.

Courtney Kennedy battled in a seven-pitch at-bat to reach base on an infield single. Jenna VanHoose drew a walk to move the tying run to scoring position. Then, Courtney Stewart’s left-field single loaded the bases.

Learic Kinser, who is UU’s leading hitter, stepped to the plate and battled to force a full count. However, the freshman came up empty after a swing and a miss.

The one-run loss was UU’s third such defeat in the previous five games.

UU’s Cortney Moore went toe-to-toe with Arbogast, throwing a complete-game gem while only surrendering five hits in the pitchers’ duel. Her only blemish came in the bottom of the sixth when Cedarville pushed a run across on a double.

Stewart and Kennedy each recorded two hits in the first game, as UU out-hit Cedarville 8-5.

UU posted five hits over the first two frames and also loaded the bases in the second inning. Unfortunately, the Blue Knights failed to pick up a timely hit and left eight runners on base.

In Game 2, Savannah Sturgill ended UU’s scoring drought with an RBI groundout in the first inning to give the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead.

The advantage didn’t last long for UU after the Jackets poured on seven runs in the bottom half.

The Blue Knights chipped away at the deficit with two runs in both the second and fifth frames to make it 7-5. But again, Cedarville responded with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

UU out-hit CU again, 11-9, as four players posted multi-hit efforts in the nightcap. Katelyn Edwards, Kinser (1 RBI), Kennedy (RBI), and VanHoose all had two hits apiece.

Stewart was tagged with the loss in the circle after allowing nine hits and five walks, but only five of CU’s 10 runs were earned.

UU begins an eight-game homestand with a doubleheader against West Liberty on Wednesday afternoon. Game 1 first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
