A winter to remember for local prep sports

It was quite a winter high school sports season in Champaign County.

The Urbana boys team and the Mechanicsburg girls squad each won a Division II state bowling title, and the Graham wrestling team claimed its 16th straight Division II state title.

Add in West Liberty-Salem’s girls basketball team advancing to a Division III regional semifinal, the Urbana boys basketball team advancing to a Division II district final, Urbana’s Jack Harris winning the school’s first-ever individual state wrestling title and WL-S’s Jamie Peterson being named first-team All-Ohio in basketball and it’s apparent that it was one of the greatest prep sports seasons in the history of the county.

The Urbana University women’s basketball team had a decent season and won a game in the Mountain East Conference tournament.

UU went 7-4 at home and 13-15 overall, but that record came against very strong NCAA Division II competition.

The UU men’s basketball team had a disappointing 2-26 record in Coach Rob Summers’ second season, although several of the Blue Knights’ losses came in close games.

Summers likely needs two or three more standout players to make the Blue Knights more competitive, but it’s important to remember that UU was winless the season before Summers arrived and that the MEC is probably the toughest conference in all of NCAA Division II.

Trivia Time – Lou Saban started his football head-coaching career at what is now Case Western Reserve University in 1950.

This week’s question UU men’s basketball coach Rob Summers began his collegiate playing career at which university?
