A head-on collision between two passenger vehicles on U.S. Route 68 south of Hickory Grove Road closed the highway for more than two hours Tuesday afternoon. The area is a frequent spot for collisions.
The crash report came in just after 3 p.m. and the services of a medical helicopter were requested, but the rain and wind prevented it from flying to the scene. One victim was entrapped in the wreckage, according to early reports.
Each driver suffered injuries and two people were reportedly taken to Springfield Regional Hospital by ambulance. An infant was also riding in one of the vehicles but no further information about any injuries or identities of crash victims was available at press time.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. More information will be published when it is provided to the Daily Citizen.
