Supervision violation hearing scheduled for Tuesday

A man facing felony charges for leading law enforcement on a series of pursuits in January is set to appear in court this week for an alleged community control violation.

Cody A. Spellman, 21, of Marysville, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for an arraignment hearing with counsel on community control violations. An initial arraignment hearing on community control violations was held on Friday.

A notice of supervision violation was filed against Spellman last Wednesday stating the alleged violation was failing to comply with an order or signal of a police officer on Jan. 11. Spellman was taken into custody on that date after a pursuit over two different days due to an active warrant for his arrest out of Union County for failure to appear in court for a theft offense.

Prior to his arrest, Spellman was observed driving a tan 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. Law enforcement officials attempted a traffic stop on Spellman, leading to a vehicle pursuit of his vehicle.

Spellman’s vehicle was found to be unoccupied in the front yard of 2789 N. state Route 560. Spellman reportedly lost control and struck a tree, causing significant damage to the vehicle which eventually caught on fire.

Spellman fled on foot through fields before he was located inside a parked RV.

Spellman was indicted in February on two counts of obstructing official business and one count each of resisting arrest, failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal trespassing as a result of the pursuit.

Previously, Spellman was placed on community control for two years in December 2013 after pleading guilty to a fifth degree felony breaking and entering charge. In April 2015, Spellman’s community control period was extended for an additional two years to December 22, 2017.

A final pretrial conference in Spellman’s most recent criminal case is scheduled for March 8.
