West Liberty-Salem board approves school calendar

WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty-Salem students will have a second year with an unusual calendar due to the district’s building project.

The school board approved the district’s 2016-17 school calendar at its Tuesday meeting.

School will begin Sept. 19 and end June 2, with the days lasting 30 minutes longer than they would normally, to accommodate the shorter calendar. The extension provides three additional days for bad weather or other emergencies. If those days are not necessary, the superintendent may reduce the calendar to match the unneeded make-up days. If there are more days of bad weather, the calendar will be lengthened.

Next year will be the second year an altered calendar is needed due to the building project. Technically the building project is to be completed by Sept. 16, and Superintendent Kraig Hissong said previously he would rather make sure construction crews have enough time this summer to finish the work, rather than change the calendar right before school starts because of a delay.

In other action, the board:

•Approved hiring Head Varsity Football Coach Dan McGill, Assistant Varsity Football coaches Rod Hager, Andy McGill and Jon McGill, Head Middle School Football Coach Rex Stapleton, Head Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Andy Cottrell, Head Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Tim Wolfe, and Head Varsity Golf Coach Darrin Leichty, all at Step 3; and Assistant Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Kim Hollar at Step 1, all for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved hiring Fall Head Varsity Cheer Coach Jessica Meginness, Assistant Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Tom Eickhoff, and Assistant Varsity Football Coach Jeremiah Vigansky, all at Step 3, for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved hiring Varsity Boys Cross Country Coach Mike Louden at Step 3, and Assistant Varsity Football Coach Justin Hayes at Step 1, for the 2016-17 school year.
