New yoga studio opens Jan. 9 in downtown Urbana

Area residents looking for a new option for working out or being more mindful will soon have a yoga studio to check out.

The Lotus Yoga will open Jan. 9 at 119 E. Court St. in Urbana. Owner Betsy Moore fell in love with yoga and wants to share it with the community.

“My dream was I must share yoga with Urbana,” she said.

Moore got interested in yoga after college. She had previously been a dancer and cheerleader in high school and while at Urbana University, and she was looking for “a physical activity where I was moving the entire time.” She has practiced yoga for a few years and when she moved to Urbana she decided to set up a studio.

Moore is an intervention specialist at Graham Elementary, a graduate of Urbana University with bachelor degrees in psychology and special education. She is a 2006 graduate of Piqua High School. She completed her training to teach yoga at Yoga on High in Columbus. She completed her Sekoia certification in May 2015.

Moore said her focus is to include humor and lightheartedness in her classes, and she personally seeks to find inspiration in her surroundings. She noted that yoga doesn’t require a specific amount of flexibility or physical fitness. Anyone interested can take part, regardless of current physical fitness level.

Moore said her hope is to create a space for all students to explore yoga without judgment.

“In our current society, it’s too easy to criticize ourselves, not take care of our bodies and forget how beautiful we are,” she said. “The Lotus Yoga is a space for total body wellness, a space for self-acceptance, a space for love.”

The class schedule is 6-7 p.m. “Hot Flow” on Monday; 6:30-7:30 p.m. “Foundations” on Tuesday; 7-8:15 p.m. “Sekoia” on Thursday; and 9:30-10:30 a.m. “Vinyasa 1-2” on Saturday. Private sessions are available any day of the week.

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is set from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the yoga studio. Coffee, tea and light snacks will be provided.
