Library, Gloria Theater plan Veterans Day events

This Veterans Day, celebrate with the Champaign County Library and the GrandWorks Foundation with a book discussion and a free movie. These two organizations partnered to promote community discussion about the understanding of veterans’ experiences in war. By looking at the human stories captured in books and movies, a better sense of understanding can be achieved and everyone can learn to better appreciate veterans who sacrificed. Sponsorships from CRSI, the Friends of the Champaign County Library, the GrandWorks Foundation, and the Champaign County Library enable both programs to be free to the public.

The library will host a book discussion at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 of two classic war novels: “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque and “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. These books feature an honest look at some of the faces of World War I and the Vietnam War and will promote discussion about how the country has handled the traumas of war.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, the Gloria Theater will host a viewing of the 1998 Academy Award winning film “Saving Private Ryan.” The film is Rated R for its realistic sequences of war violence and language. This movie offers a look at some of the effects of World War II, on both soldiers and their families at home. Donations will be accepted at the Gloria for upcoming projects to continue to restore the theater so more programs can be offered in the future.

The Veterans Day Honor Wall is back at the library for the week of Veterans Day. Stop in and see submitted information about local veterans and their service on display through Saturday, Nov. 14.
