Urbana begins considering renewal levy

Urbana City Schools board approved beginning the process of placing a renewal levy on the March primary special election ballot, though the board still needs to decide if it will seek a continuous renewal or a five-year one.

The board approved seeking auditor certification for two separate renewal levies – a 14.88 mill, five-year one, and a 14.88 mill, continuous one – at its Tuesday meeting. The approvals do not mean they will appear on the ballot; the board must vote a second time whether to place one or both on the March 15 special election ballot, Treasurer Mandy Hildebrand said. A continuous levy means if the voters approve it, they will not vote on it again. Voters made the school district’s permanent improvement levy continuous previously.

The school district’s 14.88-mill levy brings in approximately $2.18 million annually, Hildebrand said.

In other action, the board:

•Approved keeping the board member compensation rate at $125 per meeting for a maximum of nine meetings. If it were changed, it would only affect board members appointed Jan. 1, 2016.

•Approved donations of $75 to the Urbana High School Tower from Tompkins and Ellis; $50 to Urbana High School Boys Golf and Cross Country from Samantha Warwick; $236.10 to Urbana High School Boys Soccer from Valeria Upchurch; $300 to Urbana High School Volleyball from Game Time Sports Center; $250 total to Urbana Junior High HIP Program from Tracy Flora, Julie Webb, Amy Wilcoxen, Sadie Steffan, Stephanie Forson, Kelly Karnhem, Samantha Warwick, Amy Hegyi and Lynn Diloreto; $350 to the Urbana City Schools Lunch Bus Program, from Phillips Family Trust and Alma Neiswander; and a total of $1,000 in gift cards to Urbana East Elementary from Wal-Mart Foundation.

•Approved the resignation of bus driver Paul Poppel, effective Sept. 25, 2015.

•Approved bus driver Donna Pelfrey, effective Sept. 28, 2015.

•Approved substitute bus driver Paul Poppel for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved the resignation of Assistant Junior High Boys Basketball Coach Corey Mays, effective immediately.

•Approved a three-month unpaid leave of absence for Tammy Elliott, effective Sept. 28, 2015.

•Approved the resignation of Head Girls Golf Coach Rusty Myers, effective immediately.
