UU’s Wallace earns MEC football honors

Urbana University linebacker D’Gary Wallace has been selected as the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Wallace, a senior from Dayton, racked up a game-high 19 tackles in UU’s 33-30 win at Lake Erie College on Saturday. The league leader in tackles finished with the second-most stops by an MEC defensive player ever, just one shy of his own conference record of 20 total tackles during UU’s first win on Sept. 12.

Wallace came up clutch last Saturday when he stopped Lake Erie on a crucial fourth-down play in the fourth quarter, which eventually led to a UU touchdown.

He was also credited with the first fumble recovery of his career, another major play that occurred at the UU one-yard line, which prevented the Storm from extending their lead near the end of the first half.

The captain of the defense continues to climb his way up the UU all-time record book.

Following Saturday’s impressive display, Wallace now has 327 total tackles in his career, moving him into a fourth-place tie on UU’s all-time chart. He has already risen to third all-time among UU’s career leaders for most tackles for loss.

The MEC weekly award is the third for Wallace during his stellar career, and first this season.

UU (2-4) returns to league play with a road contest this Saturday against West Virginia Wesleyan (0-6). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
