The driver of a vehicle involved in a two-vehicle crash Sunday remained hospitalized Monday.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer Gilliam, 33, of Urbana, was in the surgery center at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, and was listed in fair condition as of Monday afternoon.

Gilliam was one of two people transported via CareFlight from the crash on East Hickory Grove Road Sunday.

At 2:28 p.m. Sunday, dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a two-vehicle injury crash at 491 E. Hickory Grove Road. Sheriff deputies along with the Urbana Fire Division and Moorefield Township EMS and Rescue responded to the scene.

An investigation revealed a dark blue 2007 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Gilliam was traveling eastbound on East Hickory Grove Road. At the same time, a tan 2002 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Kaitlin Mitchell, 21, of Urbana, was traveling westbound on East Hickory Grove. Mitchell attempted to turn into the driveway at 491 E. Hickory Grove Road.

Mitchell turned in front Gilliam’s vehicle, causing a collision. The Malibu went off the right side of the roadway. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Paramedics at the scene tended to the four people inside Gilliam’s vehicle. Gilliam and a minor were extricated and flown from the scene of the crash by CareFlight.

As of Monday afternoon, the minor passenger was listed in fair condition at Dayton Children’s Hospital. The two other passengers in Gilliam’s vehicle were transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital and had been treated and released as of Monday afternoon.

Mitchell was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital following the crash and was treated and released as of Monday afternoon. She was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way rule when turning left.
