SPRINGFIELD – The quick feet of running back Trevor Anderson – along with a bend-but-don’t-break defense – helped lead West Liberty-Salem to a 21-12 victory over Kenton Ridge Friday night in soggy non-league football.

Kenton Ridge drove into WL-S territory on its opening possession of the game, but the Cougars ended up turning it over on downs.

Trevor Anderson rambled 43 yards on WL-S’s first play of the game to the KR 17, and Braden Miller appeared to score a TD two plays later.

The Tigers were called for holding, however, which negated the touchdown.

On 4th and 18 at the 25, Tiger quarterback Brandon Upton connected with Dusty Moell for the touchdown.

KR quickly responded with a drive to the WL-S 13, but again ended up turning it over on downs.

After forcing a Tiger punt, the Cougars (2-1) again found themselves inside the WL-S 30-yard line.

KR was forced into another fourth down situation, and this time WL-S was whistled for pass interference in the end zone.

A facemask penalty on the Tigers moments later gave KR a first down at the 1, but an illegal motion call on the home team moved it back to the 6.

At end of the first quarter, the Tigers led, 7-0.

On fourth and goal from the 4, KR was stymied again, as the Tigers held the QB short at the 2.

An Upton pass to Anderson for 39 yards midway through the second quarter gave the Tigers a first down at the KR 36.

Anderson plowed ahead to the 25, and an Upton pass to Sam Strickland gave WL-S a first down at the 15.

A play later, Anderson scored from 14 yards out to make it 14-0 with 4:50 remaining in the first half.

An eight-yard Cougar punt moments later gave the Tigers a first down at midfield.

Three plays later, Anderson took it 42 yards to the KR 7, and the Tigers later faced third and goal at the 10.

Anderson lost four yards, and it was fourth and goal at the 14 with 23.9 seconds remaining in the first half.

WL-S attempted a 31-yard field goal, but it was wide left.

The first half ended with the Tigers on top, 14-0.

WL-S took the second-half kickoff and – led by Anderson – put together a TD drive which culminated on a Braden Miller two-yard run to make it 21-0 with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter.

The third period ended with the Tigers on top, 21-0.

A KR QB sneak from the one-yard line on the first play of the final stanza cut the deficit to 21-6, but the PAT attempt failed.

Five minutes later, a 25-yard TD run by KR’s Jaden Davis made it 21-12, but the two-point conversion attempt was fumbled.

WL-S (2-1) plays at Northeastern next Friday night..
