WEST LIBERTY – The cause of a fire that destroyed a local barn Sunday afternoon was undetermined Monday according to the West Liberty Fire Department.
Chief Conrad Hostetler said the department was called around 11:50 a.m. to 1741 Mennonite Church Road on a report of a barn fire. No residents were present at the time of the fire which was called in by a driver passing by.
No injuries were reported and the fire remained under investigation as of Monday afternoon.
Hostetler estimated the fire caused between $100,000 and $120,000 in damage with 1,500 bales of hay and 2,500 bales of straw located in the barn. He added the fire also melted the siding on the east side of the house.
The fire took hours to put out with it being put out around 8:30 p.m. Some personnel remained on the scene past midnight.
The Urbana Fire Division, Northeast Champaign County Fire District, Tri-Valley Fire District and DeGraff Fire Department responded to the fire.
The property is owned by Peter N. McGuire according to the Champaign County Auditor’s website.
