Urbana City Schools’ “Climber Cafe” summer lunch bus has provided a number of lunches for local youths this summer.
The bus was decorated with the help of local businesses and private donors, who transformed the vehicle from school bus yellow to Climber Cafe. The bus, donated by Urbana City Schools, has been delivering free hot meals to youths ages 1-18 at Rolling Hills and Harvest Square mobile home parks.
The program came about from the effort of Sodexo School Services consultant Sarah Finch and Urbana City Schools Transportation Director Dan Leiker. The meal costs are reimbursed by the Ohio Department of Education. The Summer Feed Program is offered because Urbana has a high number of youths on the free and reduced lunch cost lunch list. That qualifies the district for education department funding.
Urbana’s Summer Feed program provided 5,758 breakfasts in 54 days in summer 2014, averaging 107 breakfasts a day. A total of 13,613 lunches were served, averaging 252 meals a day. It was previously estimated that 75 to 100 additional meals per day would be delivered through the food bus program.
