Coming Saturday at Art Affair

The Champaign County Youth Choir will perform at Art Affair on the Square at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, on the steps of the courthouse. This will be the choir’s second appearance at Art Affair.

The choir’s mission is to nurture the intellectual, emotional and cultural development of children through the study and performance of fine music.

The choir is open to boys and girls grades three through eight who love to sing and want to make friends and have fun. There are no auditions; the love of music and singing are the only requirements.

The group’s music includes classical, folk, spirituals, patriotic songs and contemporary music written for young people. The students learn to sing in harmony and sometimes in different languages.

The choir is directed by Kristen Williams, music teacher at Graham Elementary School. The assistant director and accompanist is Jane Martin, music teacher at Urbana South Elementary School.

Planning and administration is done by a volunteer board: Ed Hardin, chairman and one of the original co-founders of the choir; Diane Kremer, treasurer; and parent representatives Julie Trudo and Sonia Haines.

The choir rehearses on Saturday mornings at the Episcopal Church on the corner of Scioto and Kenton streets in Urbana. The choir performs two regular concerts each year at Christmas and in the spring and other times by request. The choir begins its 23rd year on the first Saturday in October.
