Mechanicsburg school administrators receive raises

MECHANICSBURG – Principals and other administrators will receive a pay raise, the Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools board decided Monday.

The board also approved the first of two resolutions to place a renewal income tax levy on the November ballot.

The board approved 1.75 percent salary increases for Superintendent Danielle Prohaska, high school principal Paul Hershberger Jr., middle school principal Marlo Schipfer, and Transportation Director Matt Mayberry. The percentage is the same percentage increase teachers received in their latest union contract, Treasurer Scott Maruniak said.

Prohaska’s salary will be $91,575.Hershberger and Schipfer’s salary will be $76,312.50, and Mayberry’s salary will be $26,468.

The school board approved the first resolution to place its 1 percent income tax renewal on the November ballot. The levy brings in over $1 million annually, Maruniak said. The current levy does not expire until December 2016, so the board has a chance to ask voters for the renewal again if it fails.

The board will ask for a 10-year renewal time limit instead of five years. The board has lengthened the time limits on levies recently to reduce the frequency of asking voters to head to the ballot box. This also saves the district money, Maruniak said, because entities are required to pay some of the cost of elections when they have issues on the ballot.

In other action, the board:

•Approved a $50 donation from the Mechanicsburg UMC and UMW for the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip.

•Approved the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip May 3-6, 2016.
