Indian Lake Elementary celebrates summer reading

0

Indian Lake Elementary students hit a home run with summer reading. Nearly 220 first through fifth graders turned in completed reading logs indicating they read at least 30 times during the summer.

ILES reading guru Fisherwoman Frieda led a Summer Reading Celebration assembly Aug. 25 to congratulate all the readers and discuss strategies they used to sound out words and comprehend stories they read.

This summer’s slogan was “Get In the Game—Read!”

ILES reading teacher Elaine Jacobs said the baseball theme really motivated the kids.

“We’ve never had this many kids turn in reading logs,” she said. “I’m so excited and proud of them.”

After giving Frieda a high-five, students who turned in the logs got to choose a new book, enjoy an extra recess, take home a plastic mini baseball helmet and take part in an ice cream sundae party just for them. Because second graders brought in the most reading logs, those who read will also receive a special Laker foam #1 finger prize.
