VERSAILLES – The West Liberty-Salem girls track and field team placed 4th out of 10 teams in the Black “Big School” Division of the Versailles Lady Tiger Classique Invitational on Saturday.
The Tigers were led by junior Janie Kopus who won the high jump (4-10), placed 3rd in the 400-meter dash (63.41), 5th in the 200-meter dash (29.69) and was part of the 2nd place 4×200 relay team with Megan Dillon, Lydia Moell and Taylor Lauck (1:55.43).
Other WL-S placers included the 2nd place 4×800 team of Grace Adams, Payton Umphries, Reghan Bieleski and Lauck and Grace Adams’ 1,600-meter effort (5:47.95). Lydia Moell was 3rd in the pole vault (9-06).
“I was really pleased with the team’s effort and energy for the first meet of the season. We were not at 100 percent because of illness and missing athletes who participate in our school’s musical,” WL-S Coach Ann Vogel said. “But we still held our own, even though we didn’t have enough athletes to fill all the events. Our freshmen showed a lot of composure for their first high school meet.”
WL-S will compete at a quad meet hosted by Greeneview on Tuesday.
West Liberty-Salem won a five-team junior high track and field meet on Monday.
For the boys, Noah Cline (discus), Cooper Havens (long jump), Dawson Jenkins (pole vault), Isaiah McGill (100), Nick Burden (1,600, 800), the 4×100 team of Tyler Douthwaite, Drew Hardwick, Ian Maurice and Dillon Vondeylen and the 4×400 relay of Isaac Brown, Nick Burden, Luke Hudson and Dylan Lauck each won first place.
