Glenville State sweeps UU

The Urbana University women’s basketball team fell, 112-73, to Glenville State Thursday night in the Grimes Center.

The Blue Knights drop to 3-6 overall and 1-5 against league opponents. The Pioneers keep rolling with an overall record of 11-1.

UU freshman forward Sylvia Hudson registered her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 boards, while junior guard Danie Shafer led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Stefanie Davis contributed 18 points, as well.

The visitors entered the game as one of the nation’s top-scoring teams (97.3 ppg) and used their fast-paced style of play to wear down the Blue Knights. UU was forced into 20 turnovers while Glenville only gave the ball up six times. Additionally, the Pioneers knocked down 16 treys and won the rebound battle, 61-49, to move past the Knights.

UU was limited to 32-percent shooting and made 6 of 23 from beyond the arc. Glenville shot at a 42-percent clip and had 15 players see action on the court, led by guard Paris McLeod’s 19 points.

The Blue Knights return to action Sunday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 2 p.m tipoff.

The Urbana University men’s basketball came up short against Glenville State, 87-78, on Thursday night in Grimes Center. UU jumped out to an 11-0 lead and led by five at halftime but shooting woes cost the Blue Knights their fifth straight win.

UU dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play while the Pioneers improved to 6-4 (3-3) on the season.

Freshman guard DeQuan Abrom led four Blue Knights in double figures with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Abrom has scored double digits in nine straight games and has topped 20 points in four of the previous five contests.

Also reaching double figures were Carlas Jackson with 16 points and five boards, Jahmere Howze with 15 points and nine boards (has scored 10+ every game) and Charles Sweatt-Washington with 14 points and nine rebounds.

UU plays at UVa.-Wise on Sunday at 4 p.m.
