Cleveland leader joins mayor group supporting climate accord
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland’s leader says he is joining a group of mayors who say they’re committed to fighting climate change from greenhouse gas emissions.
The decision by Democratic Mayor Frank Jackson comes days after Republican President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris accord, an international agreement designed to curb climate change.
Jackson says a worldwide plan to address climate change is “simply the right thing to do.” He says he’s joining the group known as the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda.
Jackson says Cleveland will continue its efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
Trump argued that the climate agreement has disadvantaged the U.S. and benefited other countries, leaving American businesses and taxpayers to absorb the cost.
Fire breaks out at medical equipment supplier
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Officials say an Ohio home medical equipment supplier has sustained damage after catching fire.
The Canton Repository reports Miller’s Healthcare Products for Independence was closed when a fire broke out Sunday evening.
The Perry Township Fire Captain says the fire appears to have started outside. Capt. Ron Riggs says the fire spread to the roof line, causing a partial collapse of the roof.
The inside of the building sustained smoke and water damage. As for the medical supplies, Riggs says it will be “hit or miss” as to what can be salvaged.
Riggs says the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious.
Ohio gas prices rise but remain lower than national average
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio drivers are seeing gas prices rise a bit to start the month of June.
Ohio’s average was about $2.35 for a gallon of regular fuel in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. That’s up from $2.29 a week ago but much lower than the state average of $2.61 a year ago.
The national average basically held steady at about $2.38 per gallon on Monday, up two pennies compared with the average at this time last year.
AAA has predicted that summer travel could increase fuel demand and decrease inventories, potentially leading to higher gas prices.
14-year-old charged with killing dad won’t be tried as adult
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A judge has ruled the case of a 14-year-old Ohio girl charged with killing her father will remain in juvenile court.
The Butler County judge on Monday said the case is serious, but that she considered the girl’s age and lack of a prior record.
The girl’s attorney says they are pleased with the ruling. A message seeking comment was left at the prosecutor’s office. Prosecutors had sought to try the teen as an adult.
The girl was arrested Feb. 23 arrest on an aggravated murder charge. She told a 911 operator she shot her father.
Police said 71-year-old James Allen Ponder was shot in the face. Authorities allege she loaded the gun with the intent to kill.
The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles charged with crimes.
1-year-old Ohio boy dies after suspected opioid overdose
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a 1-year-old Ohio boy who was believed to have overdosed on opioids and was revived with a reversal drug has died.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says the boy died Sunday night, three days after he overdosed at a home in Akron.
Police say a 9-year-old boy called 911 Thursday evening after noticing that his young brother had stopped breathing. Paramedics gave the younger child one dose of naloxone, and he received another at a hospital and resumed breathing on his own.
Police say the child’s mother fled and was later arrested on an unrelated warrant.
Authorities didn’t immediately release the identity of the child who died. An autopsy was planned.
