A final pretrial conference for one of two former Security National Bank employees accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the bank will continue next week.

Kristen S. Head, 34, appeared in court Monday for a final pretrial conference. Head and co-defendant Kristie K. Shover, 46, were both indicted in October on one count each of aggravated theft, receiving stolen property and tampering with records for allegedly stealing money from Security National Bank, 828 Scioto St.

During Monday’s hearing, Champaign County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi informed the court that he has engaged in conversations with Head’s attorney Brian Joslyn and he believes the case is close to a resolution.

Talebi noted a disc containing video interviews was sent to Joslyn through the mail, but the disc was then returned to the prosecutor’s office. Talebi provided the disc to Joslyn during Monday’s hearing for him to review information contained on it.

After speaking further with both parties, the court scheduled to continue the final pretrial conference to Dec. 19. A final pretrial conference in Shover’s case is also scheduled to take place on the same date.

A trial in Head’s case is scheduled to start on Jan. 10, 2017.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell previously stated that Urbana police began an investigation on July 14 into a long-term internal theft case involving Shover and Head, who had been employed at the bank. Police were assisted in their investigation by the management and security of the bank.

The investigation determined that $391,000 was stolen from the bank over a period of time dating back to 2009, at a time Shover was a teller and Head was the head teller.

Later, Head was promoted to office manager and Shover was promoted to head teller of the bank.

The grand jury indictment contends that the tampering with records charge stems from Shover and Head allegedly creating fraudulent transactions and altering bookkeeping or audit records of Security National Bank to conceal the theft of money from the bank.

Lingrell said Shover was terminated from her employment with the bank as its head teller on July 14. She had been employed with the bank since 2004.

Lingrell said Head had been employed at the bank since 2001 until she resigned in 2014 as the bank’s office manager.
