The four Republican incumbents whose Urbana City Council terms expire at year’s end so far have no opposition to keeping those seats another four years, as they are the only ones who filed for candidacy by Wednesday’s 4 p.m. deadline for the May 2 primary. Since no more than one Republican, and no Democrats, filed for each seat, there is no need for names to appear on May 2 primary ballots. Write-in candidates have until 4 p.m. Feb. 21 to file with the county Board of Elections, but their names won’t appear on ballots.

City council reps who filed for another term are Gene Fields, Ward 1; Dwight Paul, Ward 3; and at-large reps Tony Pena and Doug Hoffman.

Independent candidates for city council must file by 4 p.m. May 1 for their names to appear on Nov. 7 general election ballots.

The county Board of Elections meets at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, to certify filing petitions.

Local primary issues

Only 12 Champaign County voters will have local issues to consider in the May primary, according to the county Board of Elections. Part of the Miami East school district, these voters in the Jackson East precinct will have their say concerning Miami Valley Career Technology Vocational School District’s 0.8-mill and 0.29-mill request for a bond issue and 0.34-mill property tax.

November general election

The county’s Nov. 7 general election is bound to be more eventful as several township trustee and school board seats will be up for grabs in nonpartisan elections. The filing deadline for candidates and issues is 4 p.m. Aug. 9. The deadline for write-in candidates is 4 p.m. Aug. 28.

Voter registration dates

To vote on May 2, voters must be registered with the county Board of Elections by April 3.

To vote in the general election, voters must be registered by Oct. 10.
