CLEVELAND (AP) — A man already sentenced to be executed for killing a Cleveland police officer has been resentenced in an unrelated 1994 rape case.
A Cleveland-area judge on Wednesday issued a 22-year sentence for 46-year-old Quisi (QWEE’-zee) Bryan, who appeared via video from prison.
Bryan initially was sentenced up to 50 years.
He was resentenced because of an Ohio Supreme Court ruling last year. The high court concluded that judges in five Cuyahoga County (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) rape cases wrongly applied sentences according to the law at the time the crime occurred, rather than using the law at the time of conviction.
The earlier terms were usually longer, meaning some of the inmates would get shorter sentences under the ruling last year.
It doesn’t affect Bryan’s death sentence.
